Most people didn't know that the quickest way to get to Yuki no Kuni was to travel through the Thunder Valley. That would explain why those travelers took that route before they got trapped by the beasts. Aerie knew this because she actually did her work in the Academy. She's also big on research and knowledge, it keeps her from dying in dire situations. It also explains why she was able to break through the door in the Chuunin Exams; she was able to apply the right amount of force.
